A Sun Star Shining through a Old-Growth Redwood Forest, Redwood National and State Parks, California

Sunlight filters through the canopy of giant Redwood trees, creating a sun star in an old-growth Redwood Forest along the Northern California Coast during late Autumn.

The Redwoods are one of those places you really have to see to believe. The trees are so massive, it's mind boggling. The Rockefeller Forest itself is part of the world famous Redwood Forest of the Northern California Coast, except this specific part is the world's largest remaining contiguous old-growth coastal redwood forest. The scale found here deep in this old-growth Redwood Forest is absolutely immense. These massive Redwood trees truly are giants, some of which are thousands of years old and well over 300 feet high. I had to either be out by sunset or go really slowly on the way out when I took this, as nasty fog was rolling in every night that was so thick visibility was non-existent once the sun dipped and night fell. I suppose the thick fog that is known to form here is part of the area's charm. It's part of the reason these trees can grow so massive, and that immense scale is exactly what makes the Redwoods a thin place.

I've always loved Redwoods, perhaps because there was a Redwood tree growing downtown in the city I grew up in. Every Christmas, the city would string lights on it and decorate it. It was planted years ago, and is still there today. Combine that with growing up in the Pacific Northwest, and it's no wonder a walk among giant trees feeling like home to me. No matter where you are from though, a trip to the California Coast to see the giant Redwoods is like a trip back in time. You begin to get an idea of what the west coast was like back in the days of old growth forests, and walking among these giants is always a surreal experience filled with peace and wonder.

Historical Note

The Rockefeller Forest is the world's largest remaining contiguous old-growth coastal redwood forest. It is part of the world famous Redwood Forest of the Northern California Coast, spanning approximately 7,000 acres across Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It was purchased from the Pacific Lumber Company in 1931, after John D. Rockefeller Jr has toured the area with the Save-the-Redwoods League. It was purchased with two million dollar donations by Rockefeller Jr, with the state of California matching the funds. The trees here average 600-800 years old, with several upwards to 2,000 years old. Several of the world's largest trees are near here.
