The Cascades (also known as Cascade Falls) plunges 500 feet down the snow-covered granite cliffs of Yosemite National Park and into a snow-bound Merced Canyon during a deep winter snow storm. This final tier of The Cascades occurs just after the confluence of Cascade Creek and Tamarack Creek above.

I love the almost overwhelming amount of snow in this scene. It's a snowbound wonderland capped by a veil of fog hugging the cliffs above as the waterfall plunges over the ledge. There was a cold chill of winter in the air, and you can almost feel it through the photo. A huge snowstorm dumped literal feet of snow, leaving snow covering everything everywhere. The hint of color from the rocks and trees really accent the muted color of the winter wonderland quite well. It's a subtle reminder of what was here before winter decided it was time to transform the landscape into something new. That has always been my favorite part of winter: it's ability to transform anything into a beautiful brand new scene. The beauty of a snowbound winter scene such as this is something that sticks with me long after the snow has melted.
