Dark Winter Storm Clouds over O'Neill Butte, Wotans Throne, Vishnu Temple and the Grand Canyon from Yavapai Point in Grand Canyon National Park
Storm clouds darken the skies above Wotans Throne and Vishnu Temple almost 10 miles away as sunrise golden hour light shows through a gap on the horizon. Snow begins to fall on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and Yavapai Point, as O'Neill Butte and the South Rim glow in warm morning light, a sharp contrast against the dark shadows on Wotans Throne and Vishnu Temple far across the Canyon near the North Rim
Zoroaster Temple, Bradley Point and Demaray Point are visible at the transition edge of the storm, rising up from the inner canyon above Granite Gorge and the 1.8 billion year old Vishnu Basement Rocks visible there. The formations and buttes grow progressively fainter as the storm clouds extend further north and northeast across the canyon. Komo Point, Ariel Point, François Matthes Point and Cape Royal disappear entirely under the dark storm clouds, suggesting the storm is most intense in that direction. It's a beautiful mix of shadows and light, only possible when a winter storm stretches far and wide across the entire canyon.
Ariel Point and many of the features of the Grand Canyon are named as part of the Grand Canyon's tradition of naming features after mythological and literary figures, established by geologist Clarence Dutton in the 1870s and continued by subsequent surveyors into the early 1900s. Wotans Throne, Vishnu Temple, and Zoroaster Temple were named based on the same naming convention, giving the Grand Canyon a fascinating mix of names from various cultures and literary works.
