Queen of Oregon - Full Moon Rising behind Mount Hood Alpenglow during Civil Twilight

Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Full Moon rising behind Mount Hood during Civil Twilight, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon

Alpenglow illuminates the snow on the glaciers of Mount Hood during civil twilight as the full Moon rises behind the slopes of the mountain as viewed from Sherrard Point. Ladd Glacier, Glisan Glacier, Sandy Glacier, and Little Sand Glacier all glow with the soft, faint magenta of alpenglow as the bright yellow full moon rises behind the slopes of Mount Hood near Illumination Saddle in the Cascade Range.

Langille Crags, Barrett Spur, Pulpit Rock, Illumination Rock all show on the slopes of Mount Hood, as Hiyu Mountain, Big Bend Mountain, Bald Mountain, Blazed Alder Butte, and the slopes of Halfway Hill all rise up from the Mount Hood National Forest Below.

It's always amazing to witness a full moonrise behind Mount Hood when it's the August Sturgeon Moon. There's something about seeing the moon rise behind the slopes of Oregon's highest peak which always stirs my soul. Sherrard Point on Larch Mountain in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is a fantastic place to view Mount Hood, and it certainly was this night. I've been coming up here to view Oregon's grandest peak since I was single digits in age, and over 40 years later the views from Sherrard Point still take my breath away.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the full moon rising behind Mount Hood as alpenglow during civil twilight bathes the mountain in a soft glow. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

The Magic of the Full Moon Rising Behind Mount Hood from Larch Mountain

I had this composition of the full moon rising behind the rugged volcanic slopes of Mount Hood planned for a long time. It's always a waiting game with a super telephoto full moonrise. You often end up with backup plans for your backup plans far down the road, since so much of the shot depends on the weather, the clouds, and atmospheric conditions you simply can't predict. The weather forecast called for partial cloud cover, which is never a surprise in Oregon, but I remained undeterred. You only need one break in the right spot for everything to line up, and honestly the misses are part of the fun just as much as the successes. So, with that I grabbed my camera gear and headed out determined to capture whatever beauty unfolded before me.

As I waited for the full moon to rise, sunset passed and the colors faded. I learned a long time ago to wait for the secondary alpenglow, which often occurs in the high mountains. It's a specific kind of alpenglow which makes its grand entrance long after the colors of sunset have faded away. I've often called this specific phenomenon afterglow alpenglow, as the colors hang on long after the main hues of sunset have faded, making a resurgence as you head into civil twilight.

There's something about alpenglow during civil twilight that captivates me. Those soft pastel hues are always a treat to see, but witnessing those delicate soft bands of pink alpenglow illuminate the snow covered slopes of glacial ice is always an unparalleled treat. As the golden full moon rose from behind the lower slopes of Mount Hood, the clouds draped around the peak of the mountain like a queen wearing a crown. The scene may have only lasted for a fleeting moment, but it was a breathtaking mix of ethereal beauty, one which made time seemingly stand still, and one which I could happily live in forever.
