The Aurora Borealis reflects off the waters of the Firehole River while the Andromeda Galaxy rises high in the sky above Midway Geyser Basin as it spots steam and water while the Milky Way spiral arm peaks out from behind the clouds.

This photo was taken many years ago, right around the anniversary of my Dad's passing. I'd been missing him quite a bit in the days leading up to this night. Things always seem to slow down and make sense when I'm in nature, so I decided I'd head into Yellowstone and get lost in nature. A huge solar flare went off soon after, one which would lead to a G2 class geomagnetic storm that had KP levels spike even higher during the night. Once the BZ went negative, it would bring the Auroras as far south as Yellowstone while putting on quite the show. It's rare for the Aurora Borealis to make an appearance this far south, and the purples and magentas combined with the landscape of Yellowstone to create an otherworldly feel. What made this photo special, however, was the green Aurora dropping in for a minute to say hello. This was the only glimpse of green this night, and then it was gone like a phantom in the night. Otherwise, this night was a full on display of purple and magenta (which tends to be the case when the KP level is this high). The whole night was one of those magical experiences I'll always remember. However, perhaps the most memorable thing about this night was the feeling that Dad was right there next to me the entire night. As I took in the wonders of this beautiful night, I couldn't help but think Dad was smiling down on me. I've seen a lot of beautiful things in Yellowstone over the decades, but this magical night spent there with the Aurora will always be one of my most treasured memories from there.
