The setting sun at sunset creates a sunstar (sunburst) above Llao Rock as it lights up the skies above Crater Lake, Oregon's only National Park. Sunset casts a warm glow onto Palisade Point, Dutton Cliff, Sun Notch, Applegate Peak and Garfield Peak as sunrays shine across Hillman Peak, Watchman Peak, Llao Rock, Merriam Point and Wizard Island. Grouse Hill rises up above the rim, basking in the warm glow of the sunlight.
Palisade Point is the lowest elevation point on Crater Lake's caldera rim, rising up just 507 feet above the surface of the water to an elevation of 6,805 feet. It's lowest along East Rim Drive on the caldera's northeast rim. It's striking vertical andesite cliffs, columnar jointing structures, and glassy black lava near the base can be seen in the shadows below the sunset glow which illuminates the cliffs near the top of Palisade Point. It marks the east side of Cleetwood Cove, and provides a stunning view of the Chaski Slide below Applegate Peak over 5 miles across the Crater Lake caldera. Debris from the slide continues into Chaski Bay below and down onto the floor of Crater Lake.
It's a stunning, expansive view which stretches in almost every direction. When sunset refracts off the caldera rim, it can create beautiful a sunstar which can send light rays stretching over 5 miles across the lake, illuminating the caldera walls far across the water. It's a beautiful, underrated view which has always been one of my favorite locations on East Rim Drive.

Technical Note
A high-resolution panoramic stitch [2x1 aspect ratio] of 5 single exposure images using a nodal rail and L-bracket on a 3-way pan and tilt panoramic head for nodal point accuracy, ensuring the final photo preserves museum-grade detail and resolution across the entire frame, from the textures of Crater Lake to the soft pastel colors in the sky. The sunstar (also known as a sunburst and starburst) was created entirely in camera by using a narrow aperture (f/11 in this case) and the setting sun's positioning right at the west caldera rim to create diffraction spikes.

Captured using the single exposure panoramic workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
