Autumn Magic at The Pumpkin Patch: A Sunset to Remember

I've always enjoyed the sight of a sunset over a pumpkin patch. It's something I look forward to each and every autumn. I took this one well over a decade ago, but it's always been a fall favorite. I always loved how the pastel colors at sunset here seemingly match the orange of the pumpkins and the yellows of the pumpkin patch in which they all lay. It's vintage autumn, a sight which immediately takes you back to Halloween, Thanksgiving and the cold, crisp air of fall.

The magenta in the lower left side of the photo near the horizon is the Belt of Venus, and the bluish - purple line below it is the Earth's shadow as night creeps in. It's many of my favorite things mixed together: a vintage autumn scene mixed with the warm colors of Sunset and the colors of the Belt of Venus.

Autumn has long been one of my favorite times of year. I love the cold, crisp air. Haze tends to clear out as the weather gets colder, which can lead to some spectacular sunsets. When you mix that in with the colors and hues of Fall it's always a sight to remember. One of my favorite things about this scene was the orange of the pumpkins, stretching as far as the eye can see towards the horizon and the colors of sunset. It's almost a mirror reflection of color, without the water or the mirror. It's a moment frozen in time and preserved forever. That's always my favorite thing about photography: its ability freeze that perfect moment in time, so that it can be enjoyed and preserved forever.

What is the Belt of Venus?

The Belt of Venus (also known as the antitwilight arch) is the pink glow in the sky which occurs around sunrise and sunset. It radiates out in both directions from a spot opposite the sun at a spot called the antisolar point, and is caused by sunlight from below the horizon scattering and reflecting back in the atmosphere. The blue section below the Belt of Venus is the Earth's shadow from night creeping in (or fading away at sunrise). The Belt of Venus isn't flat. It actually curves downward with the Earth's curve from the antisolar point in both directions until it disappears below the horizon, making it visible on both sides of the antisolar point.

Technical Note

By utilizing a 32-bit floating-point post-processing workflow, this image captures the immense dynamic range of the twilight gradient within an uncompressed, high-fidelity TIFF framework and achieves a dynamic range of 3.4 trillion colors. This advanced approach successfully overcomes the physical constraints of the sensor at higher ISO speeds, ensuring that fine leaf details and subtle color gradations are preserved with museum-grade clarity.

Note on Provenance

Captured using a manually bracketed exposure sequence and created via a true 32-bit floating-point RAW workflow, this work reflects the dedication to data integrity championed by the "Mead Method." Developed over 15 years of professional fine art experience, this approach preserves genuine linear light and structural detail entirely from the original field conditions. This photograph stands as a true, authentic moment in time, executed completely without the use of digital composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. A single, historic moment completely preserved.
