Storm Clouds over the Cathedral Group of the Teton Range and a Beaver Dam along Snake River at Lower Schwabacher Landing in Grand Teton National Park
A high contrast black and white photo of the Cathedral Group rising above storm clouds and a beaver dam along the Snake River. The beaver dam slows down the flow of the river as moody storm clouds blanket the morning skies above the Cathedral Group of the Teton Range while a lone Trumpeter Swan rests near the shore of the Beaver Pond.
Grand Teton, Mount Owen, and Teewinot Mountain rises up directly above the Beaver pond and the Swan while Mount Wister, South Teton, and Middle Teton rise up to the left of the Beaver pond. The Jaw appears just behind the right of Teewinot Mountain trees just behind the trees, as the storm clouds in the sky create a sharp contrast against the green foliage and mountains below.

Technical Note - Ansel Adam's 11 Zone System for Black and White Photography
Ansel Adam's zone system with 11 zones from 0 to 10 was utilized along with spot metering and histograms to pre-visualize how the scene would look while composing the frame before pressing the shutter release cable. The correct zone was carefully chosen, while a high-intensity red filter was utilized to dramatically darken the skies while making the green plant foliage and the wetlands pop, creating a moody, high contrast scene. With the exception of histograms being used, this is largely the same technique Ansel Adams used when he took his famous photo Monolith the Face of Half Dome.
Note on Provenance
Captured using the single exposure workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This black and white image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
