Hood's Magic Moment - Mount Hood Sunset Alpenglow Reflections & Methane Bubbles in Frozen Frog Lake
Frog Lake, Mount Hood, Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Alpenglow at Sunset over Mount Hood, Ice Shards and Frozen Methane Bubbles in Frog Lake in the Mount Hood National Forest, Oregon
Alpenglow just after sunset illuminates Mount Hood as the surrounding forest grows still and silent in the fading light. A thin sheet of ice begins to seal quiet, cold Frog Lake below, capturing faint reflections, frozen patterns and trapped methane bubbles beneath its glassy surface as jagged shards of ice cover the water in a frozen carpet of winter beauty.
Alpenglow kisses the top of the Zigzag Glacier, the upper portions of the Palmer Glacier (now technically the Palmer Snowfield), the upper portions of the White River Glacier, and the summit of Mount Hood in a glorious magenta glow as the lower portions of Mount Hood slopes still shine with a brilliant coat of winter white snow. The majestic purple and magenta colors reflect in the water under the thin layer of jagged ice patterns as they dance across the skies and light the clouds above.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures snow covered Mount Hood just after sunset, bathed in alpenglow as it reflects in the thin layer of jagged ice covering Frog Lake while methane bubbles rise to the surface. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
The Sunset Magic of Early Winter on Mount Hood and Frog Lake
There's something about the thin, jagged shards of ice which form as water rapidly freezes while a gentle breeze blows across the water which captures my imagination. It's always stunning to witness Mount Hood reflect in the water beneath that thin layer of ice, especially when frozen methane bubbles dance across the surface, mixing with the frozen ice shards like a delicate winter dance as magenta hues reflect off the water beneath the ice.
It's early winter perfection, that rare moment when the seasons begin to change and you capture the early ice formations as they begin to seal the water in a frozen blanket of beauty. There's something about the ethereal mix of colors and early winter wonder which always takes my breath away. I absolutely love that cold, biting air as the colors come alive in the skies above.
It's always wondrous to see the first few moments of alpenglow unfold, where those magical hues begin to overtake the upper slopes of Mount Hood and the clouds in the skies above. Time always seems to slow down whenever I witness this magical transition of light, and there's nothing quite like seeing the soft, vibrant hues dance down the snow covered slopes as Mount Hood stands tall in a magic moment of evolving light. I could live forever in these brief, few moments. It feels like a thin place which blurs the lines between Heaven and Earth, a fitting feeling for a scene where you're watching the otherworldly colors dance across the heavens above.
