Hello My Love - Mount Hood Sunrise and Sandy River Valley from Jonsrud Viewpoint

Jonsrud Viewpoint, Mount Hood, Sandy, Oregon

Sunrise over Mount Hood, the Sandy River and the Sandy River Valley in Clackamas County, Oregon

First light glows over Mount Hood and the Sandy River as sunrise colors begin to warm the morning sky. Mount Hood rises up high above the forest in the Sandy River Valley as the Sandy River flows through the valley far below Jonsrud Viewpoint. Crater Rock and Illumination Rock rise up from the upper slopes of Mount Hood as Barrett Spur juts out from the northern flank of Mount Hood. Aschoff Butte, Hickman Butte and Zigzag Mountain rise up from the foothills of the Cascade Range below the mountain as faint alpenglow reflects off the snow covered slopes of Mount Hood. A new day greets Oregon's tallest peak from one of the most stunning viewpoints of Mount Hood on the western side of the mountain.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Sunrise over Mount Hood as it rises up above the Sandy River and Sandy River Valley below Jonsrud Viewpoint. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Mount Hood and the Cascade Range, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

A Love Letter to Mount Hood: Sunrise over Mount Hood from Jonsrud Viewpoint

I've lived in Oregon my entire life. As a native Oregonian I was born and raised here. Mount Hood was my first love (along with the Oregon Coast) from long before I can remember. From the time I was barely old enough to walk and talk, my parents told me I could recognize Mount Hood.. I used to say hello to the mountain every time the clouds broke in the Willamette Valley and "the mountain was out." As such, my entire professional photography career has been a love letter to my first love: Mount Hood.

This photo was almost my serenade to Mount Hood, one last ode before saying goodbye. It was a week or so before my wife was slated to accept a marketing job at a large company in Wyoming. I was crushed. I love Oregon and I love Mount Hood. She's a beauty I never wanted to be without, but I love my wife too much to stay behind. So, I planned to quietly head out one morning to photograph my love one last time. I had a different title in mind, an ode to my beloved mountain. It was to be one last sunrise, before saying goodbye forever.

But as fate would have it, this was not to be. I just couldn't do it. I couldn't leave Mount Hood...nor my wife. I didn't know what to do. Then, my wife had the same realization. She also couldn't leave my beloved home state, and the place she's spent 2/3 of her life. So, she turned the job down. We loved Oregon too much to leave. Our love for Oregon runs deep in our DNA.

Rejuvenated, long before dawn the next morning I headed out to greet Mount Hood as she greeted the new day. I wanted a classic view: Mount Hood rising in all her majesty above the Sandy River Valley as sunrise greeted the new day. It was quiet, peaceful and the temperature was cool (just how I like it). As the colors of sunrise broke, I smiled and thought "Hello My Love" as I framed up the photo and clicked the remote release shutter. Mount Hood is majestic and grand, and there's no feeling in the world like greeting her beauty as the day starts anew.
