The Milky Way rises high into the night sky above Palouse Falls and the Palouse River Canyon in the early spring.

Palouse Falls has always been one of my favorite waterfalls in Washington. This is a true Bortle class 2 dark sky area, and you can see the stars and the milky way twinkle overhead as you look up. Before they closed the campground at Palouse Falls State Park in October 2021, I would often camp here and enjoy the wonders of the night sky as the stars twinkled above the waterfall. On this night, I woke up around 2am to get ready for the photo. The clouds started to roll in as I set up for the photo, and it provided for an interesting effect. They caught the light pollution from Pullman, Washington and Moscow, Idaho far away and the color started to reflect off the clouds. This left me with a different composition in the sky than I'd planned on, and the overall feeling of the shot would be different than I had planned. However, I am a firm believer that there is always beauty to be found even if it's unexpected so take what you are given even if it's not as planned. So, I angled the sky and foreground to capture the movement in different parts of the frame. The unexpected light pollution wasn't an issue, it gave the clouds a unique color at night, fitting for such a unique place. Now that the park is closed at night, I'll always look back fondly at the nights I spent there as I looked up at the wonders in the night skies above.

Technical Note
To overcome the extreme dynamic range of the deep canyon shadows at night, two successive exposures were utilized. This method ensures that both the waterfall detail and the astronomical clarity of the Milky Way are preserved in a way that a single exposure cannot achieve, resulting in a museum-grade file with 1:1 tonal accuracy. This ensures that the finished photo properly captures the tonal values, details, and delivers museum-grade detail
Historical Note
This image represents a now restricted perspective of Palouse Falls. In October 2021, Washington State Parks transitioned the area to Day Use Only, effectively ending legal overnight access to the falls. Captured in 2015, this photograph preserves the rare, ethereal beauty of the canyon under a starry night sky, a scene that is no longer possible to document under current park regulations.
