Happy Family - Sunset over a Cluster of Joshua Trees at Lee Flat, Death Valley, California
Lee Flat, Death Valley National Park, California
Sunset over a Cluster of Joshua Trees, the Nelson Range, Panamint Range and Argus Range in the Mojave Desert, Death Valley National Park, California
A cluster of eleven Joshua Trees grows in close proximity to each other like one, big happy family at Lee Flat in the Mojave Desert of Death Valley National Park as sunset brings soft pastel magenta, purple and orange colors to the sky above the Nelson Range, Panamint Range and Argus Range rising up in the background. The slopes of the Nelson Range are the closest slopes behind the family of trees. The Panamint Range rises up behind the Nelson Range and the cluster of Joshua Trees in the distance, with the northern crestline and slopes of the Argus Range leading directly up the ridgeline further south towards Maturango Peak (8,843 feet), the highest peak and the crown of the Argus Range.

The History of Lee Flat and its Joshua Tree Forest
Lee Flat sits on the western edge of Death Valley National Park at an elevation of about 5,300 feet between the Nelson Range to the north and east, the Inyo Mountains to the west and the Santa Rosa Hills to the west and southwest. Views of the Panamint Range to the east are incredible, with the lesser known Argus Range dominating the views to the south and southwest. Great views of the Inyo Mountains can be seen from here, to the west and northwest, with Cerro Gordo Peak visible rising above the Santa Rosa Hills.
Lee Flat is home to a dense forest of Joshua Trees, easily one of the best groupings of Joshua Trees in the park. It's one of Death Valley's largest and most pristine Joshua Tree forests. Photos of Joshua Trees here often are mistaken for Joshua Tree National Park further south. Temperatures up here are colder than down in the heart of Death Valley at Badwater Basin, and like up in the Panamint Range can often reach 20°F-30°F cooler or more, and overnight temperatures in the fall can drop below 30°F. As a higher elevation flat up in the mountains, mountain breezes compound this, often allowing for significantly colder autumn and winter temperatures.
Joshua Trees can be found between approximately 1,279 feet and 8,775 feet (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Carlsbad Fish and Wildlife Office, February 2023), though they grow best between 1,300 feet and 5,900 feet in elevation, often not growing in the hotter, drier lower elevations of the Mojave Desert as they prefer the cooler, higher elevation climates. They are only found in the American Southwest and northwestern Mexico in Baja California, and are often the tallest plant wherever they grow even though they don't dominate the vegetation ground cover as much as some of the smaller plants do.
They can live for several hundred years, with new Joshua Trees taking 30 to 70 years before they are able to mature and produce flowers. They do not have growth rings, something that makes it hard to estimate the age of Joshua Trees. They require a cold, winter freeze to flower, something that makes them unique compared to most trees and ideally situated for places like Lee Flat. Single, branchless Joshua Trees have not yet endured a cold snap cold enough to bloom, with the trees featuring more branches having endured more warm and cold cycles. This growth cycle makes them ideal for the desert climate in places like Lee Flat. One fun fact about this geographic area: the now fallen Joshua Tree from U2's 1987 album The Joshua Tree, which fell in 2000, was located near here at a slightly lower elevation of 4,691 feet (but well within the growth range). There is a new, younger Joshua Tree growing nearby, a sign that even at high elevations in the desert life springs anew.
