The Magic of a Moonlit Winter Nightscape on Mount Hood
There's something about a moonlit winter night up on the mountain surrounded by a field of ice and snow that will always take my breath away. Even though it's cold, it's serene and peaceful. It was about 14°F when I took this, but the cold temps were the furthest thing from my mind. The snow glistening, reflecting the moonlight as the White River coming off the White River Glacier on Mount Hood cut its path though the snowfield lining the bottom of the canyon.
It was the middle of the night, just me and the mountain. This scene caught my eye from a ways out, and I snowshoed up to the ridge and along its base as the scene unfolded in front of me. It felt like I was lost in winter in heaven, and it was glorious. I snowshoed up through the canyon at the bottom of the ridge as far as safely possible before stopping to take this photo. Trekking any further along the lower route looked like it could trigger an avalanche, so I was thankful my target for the scene was at the cusp of what was safe. I removed a snowshoe, sat on it, and composed the photo.
The small bit of glacial blue in a pocket in the snow caught my eye in this spot, a perfect complement to the mountain rising up from between Boy Scout Ridge and the ridge on the far side of the canyon, which formed a v-shaped snowfield in valley. After I was done with the photo, I backtracked and continued up Boy Scout Ridge to go further using the top route. I must have snowshoed over 7 miles total this night, hiking all over while lost in the moment. Moments like this are always peaceful. The beautiful mix of snow, moonlight and the mountain are so perfect it's seemingly straight out of heaven. I could have spent forever up there, and as I set up to take this I couldn't help but feel as if I was snowshoeing up and photographing up in the mountains of heaven. That's my favorite thing about moments like this: they center you, and for those brief few moments everything is perfect and right.
