Emerald Arch - Emerald Bay Milky Way Arch over Lake Tahoe, Fannette Island, and the Sierra Nevada

Emerald Bay, Emerald Bay State Park, Lake Tahoe, California

Full Milky Way Arch over Emerald Bay, Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe, and the Sierra Nevada from Emerald Bay State Park in California

The Milky Way Arch stretches across the night sky over the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the waters of Emerald Bay and Lake Tahoe in California as Fannette Island reflects in its glassy waters while lights from Vikingsholm illuminate trees on the shore and the lights of South Lake Tahoe shine from behind the ridge across Emerald Bay. Mars is visible as a bright star just inside the right edge of Scorpius (right side of the image). Antares is to the lower left of Mars, and is the brightest star in Scorpius. Saturn is visible just above Scorpius to the right of the Milky Way core.

This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures the full Milky Way Arch over Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay in the Sierra Nevada. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.

Ancient Skies: The Beauty of the Milky Way Arch over Emerald Bay and Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada

There's always then something about staring up at the night sky which captivates me. Perhaps it's because when we stare up into the night sky and look at the stars, we are looking into the past. With the exception of Mars and Saturn, all the other light in the night sky in this image is ancient. What we are seeing high above our head happened many years ago, and the light is just now reaching us. I've always thought that sentiment went well with this scene, as the arch is seemingly coming out from a spot where a landslide occurred over 70 years ago on December 25, 1955. I love how the landscape and waters below almost form an inverse arch, seemingly paralleling each other in a meeting of past and present. It's such serene beauty, the kind you could just stare at forever.
