A Rainbow Forms in Vent Geyser and Turban Geyser as a Storm Rages above Upper Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Storm clouds rage overhead as a rainbow forms in the 75 foot height erupting water of Vent Geyser, while Turban Geyser erupts to a height of 20 feet next it. Steam pours out from Percolator Geyser and West Triplet Geyser, while Grand Geyser (the largest member of the Grand Geyser Complex) has ceased erupting (though water in its pool is still visible next to Turban Geyser). Rift Geyser's pool can be seen in the back near the forest trees, visible between Percolator Geyser and West Triplet Geyser.

Photographing Geysers outside of Old Faithful are always an exercise in patience. It paid off here as the storm clouds broke at just the right time, allowing a rainbow to form in the 75 foot high erupting waters of Vent Geyser. Turban Geyser (erupting to a height of 20 feet), Percolator Geyser, and West Triplet Geyser are all erupting as well. Timing was critical, it had to be that small window where they keep erupting after Grand Geyser stops, as the water spray from 200 foot Grand Geyser would be too great otherwise, washing out the view of these other geysers. Patience paid off, and I was greeted with a wonderful mix of light and shadows. The rainbow in the spray from Vent Geyser was a wonderful contrast with the storm clouds in the sky above. I've always loved how you can see the sunlight trying to illuminate some of the clouds at the edge of the storm. The entire scene was a beautiful reminder of the natural beauty of Earth, and of the unique beauty of Yellowstone. Photo © copyright by James Mead.
