Sunrise casts a warm glow onto Wotan's Throne, Cape Royal and the south rim of the Grand Canyon over 11 miles away in the distance as a new day begins.

The warm glow of sunrise in the late Autumn on Wotans Throne and Cape Royal has long been one of my favorite things. Services at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon have long stopped by this point in the year (November), with the road only staying open until the first snow closes the gates for the year. You definitely want a satellite phone or GPS Spot Locator late in the year out at the North Rim, as you may end up being the only person for 40 miles. It becomes a truly desolate place, filled with all sorts of beauty and wonder.
At moments like these it's always easy to imagine what the first explorers here felt like when they laid eyes on it, long before the crowds arrived. I've always loved sunrises here, as the golden glow of the Sun illuminates the backside of Wotans Throne with a beautiful Golden Glow as the front side sits in shadows. There's a soft color in the sky, with a beautiful band of warm light on the horizon. It's a true moment of peace and serenity, which provide a sense of solitude that's hard to find these days in our often busy and crowded world.
Scenes such as this always make you contemplate things, as you begin to appreciate all the little things and wonders of life that are often overlooked. All too often in life, people are in such a hurry they walk right past some of the most beautiful things without a second thought. The way the rocks and formations rise up out of the canyon here, perfectly carved and chiseled by water and time is a true thing of beauty. It's a scene that has its fullest impact on you when you simply sit there and appreciate it, slowly looking over everything and taking it all in. The view from here is vast, as you're looking out towards the south rim over 11 miles away. Late in the year here, long after the crowds have dissipated, it's easy to just let life slow down and take in all the beauty of nature as it surrounds you in perfect solitude. I always come away from this place with a unique sense of wonder, and an appreciation for how unique and healing nature truly is.
