Chasing Rare Light and Water at the Trona Pinnacles

It's incredibly rare of capture the tufas of the Trona Pinnacles reflecting in a pool of water, as the area only receives 3 to 4 inches of rain annually. The roads are often closed after rain, as they can become completely impassable afterwards. This makes getting into the Trona Pinnacles and exercise in planning. You need to time it so the road is open, passable, and there are still pools of water left in the playa lakebed.

That's exactly what I did here. As soon as I recognized the conditions, I hopped in my 2005 Corolla S and made a beeline from my home in Oregon to the Trona Pinnacles. The RAV4 with BFG KO2 tires may have been the smarter play, but I banked on the roads being dried out so I could get in, opting for good gas mileage instead of more off-road ability. If the roads were not clear, no matter. A long hike in or Death Valley were plan B!

The entire area here is otherworldly, feeling as if it belongs on Mars. Seeing the tufas rise high out from the Searles Dry Lakebed was a spectacular sight. Hiking around the area looking for ephemeral pools of water was something I'll never forget. There's something surreal knowing you're standing on a landscape that was once covered in 640 feet of water.

Once I found the pool of water I liked, it was pure magic. The whole area is covered in light, white colored surface that can reflect the warm hues in the sky when the conditions are right. Storm clouds covered the sky as I set up, and the colors of the golden hour bathed the clouds above and the landscape below in glorious golden light. It was a perfect moment in a thin place, something that seemed all too perfect for this world. Once the day drew to a close, I hiked back to my car and headed out. It's not often you are able to experience conditions like this in the Mojave Desert, but when you do it's something that will always stick with you.

The Geology and Ice Age History of the Trona Pinnacles and Searles Lake

The Trona Pinnacles is a 3,800 acre geologic area with more than 500 tufa spires, with some rising as high as 140 feet above the dry lake bed of Searles Dry Lake Basin (also known as the Searles Lake basin). The area is a classic example of a playa, which is a dry lake bed. Specifically, the area is what's known as a moist crystal body playa, which means it's a mostly flat, bone white surface containing layers of minerals and salts. This light colored surface makes it an ideal place for reflecting the colors of sunrise or sunset when the conditions are right. The tufas here are mostly composed of calcium carbonate, and cover an area of approximately 14 square miles.

The Pinnacles (the tufas) were formed between 10,000 and 100,000 years ago when Searles Lake was part of a chain of interconnected Pleistocene deep water lakes stretching from Mono Lake to Owens Valley to Death Valley which were fed by glacial runoff from the Sierra Nevada Mountains. During the ice ages, the glacial runoff and calcium rich groundwater interacted with the alkaline lake water, which caused the calcium carbonate tufas to form and slowly grow upward. At its peak during the Pleistocene era, Searles Lake reached a depth of 640 feet, which would make it one of the top 15 deepest lakes in the United States if it still existed today. Once the lake dried up, these ancient once underwater structures were shaped and sculpted by the elements.

Along with Mono Lake, the area has some of the best examples of Tufa formations in the North America. As such, the US Department of the Interior designated it a National Natural Landmark in 1968. Today, the area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) within the California Desert Conservation Area. The 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence affected the tufas, causing some to topple and causing immediate structural damage to others.

Still, most of tufas survived the earthquake, and there are actually several different kinds located here. The BLM classifies the pinnacles into four geological shapes: towers (taller than wide, rising 30-40 feet), tombstones (stubby and squat, rising 20-30 feet), ridges (massive, toothy tufa ruins that can be long and wide), and cones (less than 10 feet tall).

The area has been made famous through several Hollywood films and TV shows which were filmed here, including Pitch Black, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes, Lost in Space, Disney's Dinosaur and Battlestar Galactica. Music videos and commercials have also been filmed here, including Rihanna's music video for "Sledgehammer," the music video for Lady Gaga's "Stupid Love," and a Christian Dior commercial featuring Charlize Theron. The area has gained popularity as a filming location over Death Valley National Park in the years since Death Valley became a National Park due to fewer commercial filming restrictions.
