Historic Cedar Creek Grist Mill with Bigleaf Maple Fall Colors in the Autumn, Clark County, Washington

Built in 1876, the Cedar Creek Grist Mill still stands frozen in time where it was built in the 19th century. The Bigleaf Maple leaves around the mill begin to change as the fleeting fall colors arrive. Cedar Creek Grist Mill is registered as a National Historic Site, and it's one of only two remaining grist mills in Washington

Fall Colors at Cedar Creek Grist Mill: Magic in the Forests of Southwest Washington

The colors of fall are fleeting, which adds to the incredible sense of wonder when you look out at the over 150 year old Cedar Creek Grist Mill. Built in 1876 along Cedar Creek and restored to working conditions in the 1980s, a visit to this magical place feels as if you're peering straight into the past. There's a waterfall next to the mill historically known as Grist Mill Falls. Although it may not be as well known as its similar named brethren at Babcock State Park, seeing the waterfall next to the grist mill here is equally as stunning in its own, unique manner. The Bigleaf Maple leaves around the mill and creek begin to change color once the temperatures drop and the rains return, a hallmark of the changing seasons here in the Pacific Northwest. As the fall colors return, it creates a truly magical sight.

I've always loved the harmony at this location in the fall. At times, the autumn colors which adorn the leaves can take on a shade similar to the wood the grist mill is built from once the colors of fall begin to make their grand entrance. Certain years, the Big Leaf Maples and trees in the forest here take on the yellow hue Big Leaf Maples are famous for. At other times, when the conditions in Southwest Washington are exactly right, they take on a deep orange hue. I grew up surrounded by Big Leaf Maples which would occasionally turn orange, so seeing these magical colors made an appearance here brings back a rush of childhood memories, which is incredibly fitting for a location steeped in over a century and a half of history.

Whichever colors make their appearance here during any given fall season, it's a moment frozen in time forever. The clarity of the water here is always a sight to see, and as you look straight through to the bottom of the creek bed you can't help but think of what memories this place must hold from yesteryear. It's always feels like a moment straight from the past. That's what makes this place so magnificent: the magical intersection of the historic grist mill, the autumn colors, Grist Mill Falls and Cedar Creek is a moment frozen in time which feels like it's fresh out of a fairytale.
