Cloaked - Temperature Inversion at Sunset over Moran Point, South Rim, Grand Canyon, AZ
Moran Point, South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
Cloud Inversion during Sunset at Moran Point Looking Out at Zuni Point in Grand Canyon National Park
A partial thermal inversion fills the Grand Canyon at Sunset at Moran Point, as the Colorado River faintly shows far below between Zuni Point and the pillar formations rising up through the clouds of the inversion. Rama Shrine and Vishnu Temple can be seen faintly rising up through the cloud inversion behind the pillar formations. The edge of the North Rim is faintly visible in the background, mostly obscured by the thermal cloud inversion.
Thermal inversion at Moran Point on the South Rim
Thermal inversions are one of the most spectacular sights I've ever seen at the Grand Canyon. They're incredibly rare, and I've been fortunate enough to see them on several occasions. They form when a warmer layer of air sits atop a layer of colder air. A late Autumn snowstorm had given way to warmer temperatures as the day went on, leaving colder air filling the Canyon 5,000 feet below as the light from the setting Sun warmed up the rim and the skies above. This resulted in perfect conditions for a thermal inversion. The depths of the canyon filled with clouds, as the formations and walls of the Grand Canyon rose up out of the sea of white. It was almost as if I was standing at the edge of heaven, looking out into the clouds as brief glimpses of earth show through far below. It's a stunning and unique sight, which often lasts for a brief few moments before the clouds below begin to dissipate. Although the moment may be brief, time always seems to stand still at moments like this as you seemingly get lost in this beauty forever. One of my favorite things about photography is its ability to freeze a moment in time, so that these brief moments of unique beauty can last forever and be shared with others.
What is a Grand Canyon Temperature Inversion?
A temperature inversion, also known as a cloud inversion and thermal inversion, occurs when cold, dense air becomes trapped at the bottom of the canyon beneath a layer of warmer air above. This creates a sea of clouds which completely fills the canyon, creating a rare, ethereal sight.
What Causes a Temperature Inversion?
When cold air fills the canyon, the air above can warm at a more rapid pace. This creates clouds and fog in the colder, denser air filling the canyon. This colder air becomes trapped by the warmer air above as it creates a lid trapping the cold, dense air. This creates an inverted temperature and thermal gradient.
Normally, the Earth's atmosphere is heated from below, with the warmer layers near the ground. With a temperature inversion, the opposite happens and this thermal gradient is flipped. When a warmer layer of air moves over a colder, denser layer of air a temperature inversion occurs. When this happens in places like the Grand Canyon, it causes a partial or total cloud inversion which fills the canyon below with a layer of clouds.
I've had good luck with temperature inversions at the Grand Canyon, and they can occur in the colder seasons when a storm begins to break. During a storm, cold air fills the canyon below and the air above. Once the storm begins to break, the air above begins to warm up but the colder, dense air from the storm remains trapped in the canyon by the canyon walls below. This causes fog and clouds to form, which fills the canyon with a layer of clouds known as a cloud inversion. The warmer air above acts as a lid, trapping the colder air for a period of time until equilibrium begins to occur, at which point the cloud inversion will begin to break and the temperature inversion will begin to flip back to normal.
This can occur at places other than the Grand Canyon as well. I have photographed it on several occasions from the ridges surrounding Mount Saint Helens. Although the location may be different, the causes are the same.

Technical Note
A high-resolution panoramic stitch [standard 2:3 aspect ratio] of 5 single exposure images using a nodal rail and L-bracket on a 3-way pan and tilt panoramic head for nodal point accuracy, ensuring the final photo preserves museum-grade detail and resolution across the entire frame, from the textures of Grand Canyon to the thermal inversion clouds at sunset in the sky.
Note on Provenance
Cloud Inversions at the Grand Canyon are incredibly rare, with total cloud inversions occurring only once every several years and partial cloud inversions only occurring a few times a year at most. This was captured using the single exposure workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
Artist's Note
This was taken in late November 2019 after I had contracted the original strain of Covid-19 about 12 days prior, at the end of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, and had isolated at a hotel in Williams, Arizona where everyone at the hotel had already had what they nicknamed the "death flu." This was long before anyone knew what it was. After I recovered, I went back to work. I was over the worst of it by then, but the exhaustion and fatigue still was causing issues. After recovering from it, I had to sleep in my vehicle between shoots during the day to make sure I was functional for the magic this place is known for.
The reward for perseverance was amazing: a thermal inversion at sunset from Moran Point, with the Colorado River visible below a thin place in the clouds. After finishing my photo shoot, I went to Yosemite for a late November photo shoot, before racing back home to Portland a few days later to beat a bomb cyclone snowstorm before it could shut down I-5 in Northern California and Southern Oregon. I made it home with hours to spare, as later that morning I-5 in Southern Oregon was shut down for a period of time. Sometimes everything goes smoothly in nature. Other times, it doesn't. But the reward for perseverance and determination is always worth it.
