The Milky Way spiral arm rises high into the sky above the Gallatin River while the greens of the Auroras fade, giving way to blue colors as nautical dawn approaches in Yellowstone National Park.

These are some of my favorite photos. There's a very thin window where you can catch transition photos, where the light from approaching dawn begins to brighten the sky as it slowly turns more blue, but the Milky Way and the stars briefly hang on. This is the true transition, as night was ending and Sunrise was approaching. It's so thin of a window you have to rely on knowledge and not your eyes. Planning guides are of no use, it's all experience. It's very easy to miss it, and it doesn't even last for more than a few minutes at most before the light from the sun far below the horizon becomes too strong and washes out the MW core and the stars. It's that narrow window where the Milky Way and the stars still hang on as the light begins to transition. It's one of those moments most people will never see. Perhaps that's why these are among my favorite photos, as they always instill a sense of childlike wonder and amazement in me every time I see it. I love being able to capture moments most will never see and sharing them with the world. It's a moment frozen in time. I think it's the amazing wonders of nature which keep many people going, even if they can't be there to see it. Moments like this are almost straight out of a charmed dream, perhaps that's why they are so inspirational.

Foreground illumination of the Gallatin River and surrounding meadow achieved using precise LLL (Low Level Lighting), which achieves a balance between the Milky Way, the night sky and the river allowing for a single-exposure workflow.
