The Belt of Venus illuminates the skies above the Mesquite Sand Dunes and Grapevine Mountains in Death Valley National Park as dawn gives way to sunrise. The Grapevine Mountains run along the California-Nevada border, separated from the Funeral Mountains to the south by Boundary Canyon and Daylight Pass. They are the northern sub-range of the Amargosa Range, stretching 22 miles along the eastern boundary of Death Valley forming a dramatic backdrop above the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, stretching from the north-northwest (NNW) to the northeast (NE). The northern boundary of the range, seen here in my photo Sand Waves, is limited by Grapevine Canyon and Scotty's Castle.
The Grapevine Mountains are the northern sub-range of the Amargosa Range, which stretches 110 miles along the eastern edge of Death Valley from the Grapevine Mountains in the north, through the Funeral Mountains in the center, to the Black Mountains in the south. Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes - One of the Wonders of Death Valley National Park
Death Valley has always been a place of great breadth, which is one of the reasons I've always loved going there. It's so different than my home in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. For such a seemingly desolate landscape, there is an amazing variety of things to see and photograph. The Mesquite Sand Dunes are arguably the most famous sand dunes in the park. It takes some hiking to find compositions without footprints or other photographers in them, but when you finally come across that spot you're greeted with a seemingly boundless expanse of sand dunes surrounded by high mountain peaks.
When the Belt of Venus begins to creep up over the mountain peaks and the boundless expanse of sand at dawn, it's an unbelievable sight. It's a place of incredible wonder, one which my son thoroughly enjoys exploring with me. He's been exploring Death Valley with me since he was barely old enough to walk. At 1 year old he would walk out into Badwater Basin with me. At 2 he was following me out onto the Racetrack Playa, famous for its mysterious sailing stones, which are rocks that appear to move on their own across the flat playa surface. Now he follows me up and down the sand dunes, his camera in hand eager to see what beauty awaits us. He loved the sights and colors this morning, and had a blast being in the sand. It always brings a smile to our face when we return to these spots, eager to see what undiscovered beauty awaits. I'm always excited whenever we visit these grand cathedrals in nature, now that he's begun to take photographs with my backup camera body and backup tripod. It brings all sorts of new adventures as we explore the boundless expanse of the Mesquite Sand Dunes. We've seen a lot of beautiful things in Death Valley, but the way the Belt of Venus rose above the Mesquite Sand Dunes and Grapevine Mountains this morning at sunrise is something we will never forget.
What Created Sand Dunes in Death Valley?
The creation of sand dunes requires a source of sand, prevailing winds to blow the sand and a place for the sand to collect. All factors must be present. The Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes were created by exactly that. Sand blew down from eroding mountains to the north (along with the many washes and canyons). Wind moved the sand created by erosion, and these prevailing winds blew it down into the valley where the mountains to the south created a barrier which trapped the sand, resulting in the perfect conditions to create these otherworldly sand dunes. One of the reasons sand dunes are only found here and a few other places in the park is that these are the only areas where a barrier is present to trap the sand. The Eureka Sand Dunes, Saline Valley Sand Dunes, Hidden Valley Sand Dunes, Panamint Valley Sand Dunes, and Ibex Sand Dunes were all created in a similar manner due to similar conditions.
Individual sand grains may blow and move, but the sand dune field remains due to these unique conditions. At sunrise and sunset, the shadows created by the sunlight and the tall mountains surrounding the dunes create a stunning mix of shadows and light. The dunes get their name from the mesquite trees which grow here in abundance. The bean pods from these trees are a traditional food for the Timbisha Shoshone, and in the spring the upper branches are filled with colorful yellow flowers and green leaves. Wildlife can be found here at night if you pay attention, as both kangaroo rats and sidewinder rattlesnakes are nocturnal.
What is the Belt of Venus?
The Belt of Venus (also known as the antitwilight arch) is the pink glow in the sky which occurs around sunrise and sunset. It radiates out in both directions from a spot opposite the sun at a spot called the antisolar point, and is caused by sunlight from below the horizon scattering and reflecting back in the atmosphere. The blue section below the Belt of Venus is the Earth's shadow from night creeping in (or fading away at sunrise). The Belt of Venus isn't flat. It actually curves downward with the Earth's curve from the antisolar point in both directions until it disappears below the horizon, making it visible on both sides of the antisolar point.
