Winter Temperature Inversion and Snow in Garden Creek Canyon from Below the Grand Canyon South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park
Snow lines the top of the Grand Canyon and upper sections of Garden Creek Canyon below the South Rim during a winter snow storm, as a temperature inversion begins to fill the canyon below the rim when the snow storm begins to dissipate. A lone, small tree grows from the top of formations rising up from Garden Creek Canyon below the rim while plants poke through the snow covering the ground, as a veil of fog shrouds the upper portions of the cliffs of the South Rim in mystery.
The Kaibab Limestone showing above the Toroweap Formation and Coconino Sandstone below the rim sits shrouded in a cloud inversion, creating a veil of clouds and fog which obscures the upper parts of the Grand Canyon and Garden Creek Canyon in the distance. The Bright Angel Trail follows Garden Creek down through the Garden Creek Canyon, descending from the top of the rim down into the thermal inversion as it makes its way towards inner canyon where Garden Creek merges with Pipe Creek.
The veil of clouds and fog from the temperature inversion creates an element of mystery, obscuring the warm colors of canyon walls rising above and the depths of the canyon below. When a snowstorm begins to lift even slightly and the winds are calm, the unique topography of the Grand Canyon creates a rare mix of meteorological elements which leads to a cloud inversion during a snowstorm. The warmer air on top creates a cap on top of the colder, moist, dense air below which creates a thermal inversion as snow lines the canyon rim, slopes and towers. It's a wonderful mix of factors coming together, which transforms one of nature's grandest cathedrals into a shrouded sea of mystery.
What is a Grand Canyon Temperature Inversion?
A temperature inversion, also known as a cloud inversion and thermal inversion, occurs when cold, dense air becomes trapped below the rim and at the bottom of the canyon beneath a layer of warmer air above. This creates a sea of clouds which completely fills the canyon, creating a rare, ethereal sight. Cloud Inversions at the Grand Canyon usually occur in the late fall and winter.
What Causes a Temperature Inversion?
When cold air fills the canyon, the air above can warm at a more rapid pace. This creates clouds and fog in the colder, denser air filling the canyon. This colder air becomes trapped by the warmer air above as it creates a lid trapping the cold, dense air. This creates an inverted temperature and thermal gradient.
Normally, the Earth's atmosphere is heated from below, with the warmer layers near the ground. With a temperature inversion, the opposite happens and this thermal gradient is flipped. When a warmer layer of air moves over a colder, denser layer of air a temperature inversion occurs. When this happens in places like the Grand Canyon, it causes a partial or total cloud inversion which fills the canyon below with a layer of clouds.
I've had good luck with temperature inversions at the Grand Canyon, and they can occur in the colder seasons when a storm begins to break. During a storm, cold air fills the canyon below and the air above. Once the storm begins to break, the air above begins to warm up but the colder, dense air from the storm remains trapped in the canyon by the canyon walls below. This causes fog and clouds to form, which fills the canyon with a layer of clouds known as a cloud inversion. The warmer air above acts as a lid, trapping the colder air for a period of time until equilibrium begins to occur, at which point the cloud inversion will begin to break and the temperature inversion will begin to flip back to normal.
This can occur at places other than the Grand Canyon as well. I have photographed it on several occasions from the ridges surrounding Mount Saint Helens. Although the location may be different, the causes are the same.

Note on Provenance
Both Total Cloud Inversions and Partial Cloud Inversions at the Grand Canyon are incredibly rare. Total Cloud Inversions occur only once every several years and partial cloud inversions occur only a few times a year at most, both usually occurring in the late fall and winter. This was captured using the single exposure workflow of the "Mead Method," developed over 15 years of fine art landscape experience. This image preserves a genuine, single moment in time executed entirely in the field without the use of composites, sky swaps, or generative AI. Just a single moment in time, preserved.
Artist's Note
While shooting from this ledge below the South Rim, I watched another visitor attempt the Bright Angel Trail in black Nike running shoes he had duct taped for traction and waterproofing, the same encounter I described in Winter's Curtain. He was sliding all over the place, and smartly turned around before getting too far and getting stuck (or worse). It's a good reminder that winter conditions at the Grand Canyon demand proper preparation. I was wearing winter boots with chains and ice spikes and had winter trekking poles, which made all the difference when standing on snow and ice covered rocks a bit below the rim. The Grand Canyon in winter is breathtaking, but it demands respect so always be prepared in order to ensure you stay safe.
