As It Always Was - Golden Sunset and Dark Storm Clouds over Pelican Valley and Pelican Creek
Pelican Valley, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Storm clouds at Sunset over Pelican Valley and Pelican Creek in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Dark, ominous storm clouds form at sunset over Pelican Valley and the Yellowstone prairie as the golden colors of sunset show on the horizon and break through the clouds above. The Absaroka Mountains rise in distance as Pelican Creek weaves its way through the lush, green meadow of this remote, wide-open place as Lodgepole pine trees, Engelman spruce, and Subalpine fir trees grow in the forests surrounding the wide open, grassy meadow.
This luxury limited-edition museum-grade print captures Pelican Valley and Pelican Creek at sunset in Yellowstone National Park as dark storm clouds line the skies overhead. It is part of James Mead's fine art documentation of Pelican Valley, Pelican Creek and Yellowstone National Park, and is available as a limited edition luxury museum-grade fine art print by James Mead.
Pelican Valley at Sunset: A High Stakes Journey into the Rugged Wild of Yellowstone
Pelican Valley in Yellowstone National Park has one of the highest concentrations of Grizzly Bears in the lower 48 states. It's prime Grizzly Bear habitat. Access is restricted most of the year, and when access is open, hours are restricted to day use only. It's a place no sane photographer would venture to photograph at sunset. Yet, the draw to Pelican Valley is strong. It's a place that's untouched and frozen in time. 630,000 years ago when it was created after a massive volcanic eruption by the Yellowstone Caldera, it was raw, rugged, wild beauty. 630,000 years later, it's still raw, rugged, pristine beauty. 500 years from now, it will be raw, rugged, unchanged beauty. Simply put, it's a place that is as it always was.
I live for those places which still feel unblemished. In a chaotic modern world where everything is superficial, there's something comforting and beautiful about a place like Pelican Valley. With the Absaroka Mountains to the east as Pelican Creek weaves its way through a valley, it's a place which has remained untamed since the dawn of time. It's unadulterated, unbridled beauty that remains unspoiled, and it's a place I had to witness at sunset.
Hiking into Pelican Valley is no walk in the park. With the highest concentration of Grizzly Bears in the lower 48 states, all precautions must be taken. Grizzlies are just as likely to cause you trouble 0.5 miles into the trail as they are when you turn around at the end of the 6.2 mile out and back trail. At 16.2 miles total if you make the full loop on the Pelican Valley Trail, Raven Creek Cutoff Trail, and Pelican Creek Trail it's a trail full of real risks as well as beautiful rewards. The risk is real no matter how far in you venture. It's not the length of this journey that makes this hard. It's the very real dangers that exist in this wild, unscathed wilderness.
I waited a long time for my opening here, where I felt the light would be just right. Four days after Pelican Valley opened, I ventured in. Grizzly Bear activity here is at its highest at dusk. So, I knew I had a very short window. Between the risks and the closing time, I knew the window of magnificent light would be minutes at most, so I planned carefully and made sure I stuck to a strict schedule.
You can feel the isolation of this place shortly after starting the trail. I took four canisters of bear spray with me. One on my tripod legs, one in my coat chest pocket, and 2 on my camera bag well within arm’s reach. I had a k-bar strapped to my chest, in case bear spray wasn't enough. As I left the trailhead, I prayed I wouldn't run into any grizzlies.
I talked to myself the whole way, thinking out loud. Anything I could do to make noise and announce my presence. A storm was rolling in, and I knew that magic sunset light would create a wondrous palette of color as the dark, ominous storm clouds mixed with the golden colors of sunset. It was pure bliss. It was nature as heaven intended: untainted, rugged, raw, wild and serene all at the same time.
The grasses and small wildflowers in Pelican Valley mixed with Pelican Creek running through the valley as trees lined the edges of the meadow. The storm clouds danced overhead, dark and ominous as the valley lay painted in a blanket of green. With no grizzlies around yet and closing time for the trail drawing near, I patiently waited for the clouds to break just enough. Then it hit, the golden light of sunset lit up the horizon as it simultaneously broke through the clouds overhead, painting the sky in a glorious mix of shadows and light, dark and gold. It was Yellowstone National Park at its finest: raw, rugged, real and full of a wondrous color palette of light dancing across the skies above one of nature’s last untouched, perfect places.
It was a few, brief moments in what felt like the rugged wilds of Heaven under an ethereal mix of golden sunset breaking through the clouds. Sunset was here and closing time for Pelican Valley was minutes away. I had no desire to push my luck and be anywhere near here at dusk. I quickly packed up my camera bag and headed out, bear spray in hand. I wasted no time getting back to my vehicle, and when I climbed into the driver’s seat I couldn't help but be thankful for the perfect light I'd witnessed. Rugged, raw beauty is getting harder and harder to find these days, but the effort to witness nature in a place like that is rewarding.
Pelican Valley was just as I'd envisioned. It was a high stakes journey, one of the most dangerous of my career. Any time spent in Grizzly territory is a gamble, but doing so at sunset a bit before the Grizzlies make their appearance as dusk nears is a dangerous proposition which requires a lot of planning, preparation and a bit of luck. But it was worth the effort, and it was worth the reward. Every time I think back on my brief time spent there I smile twice, once for the unimaginable beauty I witnessed in one of the last wild places, and once for the fact I encountered no Grizzly Bears on my journey in or out.
