A River Runs Through It - Alpenglow Sunset over Cape Royal and the Colorado River, Grand Canyon, AZ

Cape Royal, North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Alpenglow during Civil Twilight over Venus Temple, Apollo Temple, Unkar Creek and the Colorado River from Cape Royal in Grand Canyon National Park

Vibrant magenta alpenglow after sunset illuminates the skies over the Grand Canyon, Unkar Creek and the Colorado River with beautiful pastel colors as the day draws to a close at Cape Royal along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The colors of the Belt of Venus hang on in the southeastern skies as Venus Temple, Apollo Temple, the Palisades of the Desert and the Desert Facade (both along the East Rim of the Grand Canyon) glow in the alpenglow light. Desert View (8.57 miles across the canyon) and Comanche Point (8.19 miles across the canyon) glow across the canyon in the distance.

The transition of the Grand Canyon from the South Rim to the East Rim can be seen next to Desert View. This V-shaped opening in the canyon walls is where the Grand Canyon and Colorado River curves northward towards Marble Canyon as the South Rim transitions to the East Rim. The edge of the top of Angel's Window can be seen in the bottom right of the image, showing all 3 major rims of the Grand Canyon (North Rim, East Rim, and South Rim) in one photo.

What is the Belt of Venus?

The Belt of Venus (also known as the antitwilight arch) is the pink glow in the sky which occurs around sunrise and sunset. It radiates out in both directions from a spot opposite the sun at a spot called the antisolar point, and is caused by sunlight from below the horizon scattering and reflecting back in the atmosphere. The blue section below the Belt of Venus is the Earth's shadow from night creeping in (or fading away at sunrise). The Belt of Venus isn't flat. It actually curves downward with the Earth's curve from the antisolar point in both directions until it disappears below the horizon, making it visible on both sides of the antisolar point (sometimes upwards of 45 degrees in either direction until it disappears below the horizon).

Artist's Note

The top of Angel's Window at the far edge where it gets thin produces some amazing views, but it can be daunting up there in the fading light. When you're standing at an overlook with 1,000 foot drops on 3 sides during Civil Twilight and railing barely up to your waist, your eyes begin to play tricks on you. Your cones are beginning to fail in the fading light and it's not dark enough for your rods to work yet. It can make you disoriented, where you feel like you’re losing your balance even though you are not. You have to really dial in, especially if you’re a guy like me who is afraid of heights. But, dial in I did. The sunsets like this which hang on forever are a true gift in nature. During these rare sunsets, the pastel magenta of the Belt of Venus transition to true alpenglow, which hangs on throughout Civil Twilight and even Nautical Twilight, until the sun is so far below the horizon night simply sets in. It's one of the most amazing things to witness in nature, and I'm fortunate to have been able to witness it on many occasions over my 15 plus year career.
