Moonlight brings a unique beauty to Yosemite National Park. El Capitan, the Merced River, Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and the other wonders of Yosemite come to life in an entirely new manner when moonlight illuminates Yosemite’s breathtaking landscape. Moonlight transforms Yosemite into a breathtaking scene seemingly from another world. The rising moon behind clouds can create an ethereal effect, and seeing the moonlight illuminate the towering granite cliffs of Yosemite Valley is a sight to behold. When snow blankets the valley floor and fog cloaks the cliffs above, the resulting moonlight feels like pure magic.
I’ve spent most of my life visiting Yosemite. From a young age, my father always told me about the wonders of this place, often sharing the work of John Muir and Ansel Adams with me. This had a profound effect on me, and it’s why I’ve spent most of my life chasing wonder in this thin place. Yosemite always seems to blur the lines between Heaven and Earth, and seeing moonlight transform this beautiful landscape will always leave me with a sense of awe and wonder. There’s something magical watching the moon illuminate the walls of the granite cathedral that is Yosemite Valley. It transforms nature’s grandest cathedral into a temple of shadows and light. When the full moon shines overhead against the backdrop of a snow covered valley in the winter, it almost feels as if you’re snowshoeing in the snowy meadows of Heaven.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Yosemite under moonlight over the decades, and it’s always enchanting. Seeing Yosemite Falls tumble 2,425 feet over the snow covered cliffs down towards snow covered Cook’s Meadow is a sight I’ll never forget, and snowshoeing along the Merced River under a veil of moonlight is an experience almost too perfect for this world.
Moonlight provides a different look depending on where in the sky it is and what the moon phase is, and that’s always been one of my favorite parts about witnessing Yosemite by moonlight. A full moon overhead can transform the night sky into a cool blue filled with only the brightest stars; a moon rising or setting lower on the horizon creates a warm glow in the sky, on the clouds and on the landscape below as the granite wonders of this breathtaking place get bathed in warming light. One of my favorite memories of Yosemite under moonlight will always be seeing the warm colors of the Yosemite Valley Chapel surrounded by a blanket of snow. Snow clung to the tree tops and clouds filled the skies above, as a small patch of blue night sky shined through as diffused moonlight softly illuminated the landscape below.
Moonlight in Yosemite always leaves me with feelings of awe and wonder. There’s something magical about witnessing a thin place like Yosemite transform into something entirely different yet equally stunning. I’ve spent a lifetime chasing the wonder of Yosemite. Time always stands still here, and it always leaves me with feelings of peace and serenity. I hope everyone viewing my Yosemite by Moonlight Fine Art Photography gallery experiences the same feelings of awe and wonder that I’ve always experienced here.
